nothing is like it was in the old daze...

About 9 years ago I visited Sussix at work and he gave me a Mirado Black Warrior pencil from his office supply.  I was super stoked to have a mean sounding Black Warrior pencil to use at college for my scantron test taking.  Funny to be stoked about a pencil, but the lame #2 Yellow pencils just get so old and sucky.  Well, as things are, I used that one single pencil to take all tests for the last 3 years of school (yes, one pencil for three years and dozens of tests).  Here is my post honoring said pencil.

Here is an excerpt from a review on Amazon.com from 2007:
"This pencil is a beast. Taking paper like a F-18 takes the skies, this pencil is for serious people only. With a fine pink pearl eraser, it will destroy weakness."

Well, those were the old days.  Apparently things have changed in the world of Black Warrior pencils.  Heres how I found out....

I am sitting at work and overhear someone digging through a stack of misplaced office supplies.  They say aloud, "Hmmm.  Mirado Black Warrior.  Who even uses pencils?"  My head pops up in excitement. Could it be true?  Could relatives of my famed pencil be within earshot of my desk?!?  I run over to the office supplies excitedly and pick up a whole box of Mirado Black Warrior pencils.  I pop the top and pull out the shiney black, beautiful...wait a minute, what is that?  Are those hearts?!?  I scream 'NOOOOOOO!'  (That is true, I really did scream)

So, the Black Warrior tradition has been defiled by hearts.  How dare they mix love and war?  I am now speachless and hurt to think of how this addition has altered history and diminished my ultimate regard for Mirado Black Warrior pencils.  I still laude my original lil' guy for his grand efforts and diligence.  So, Mirado (a part of Paper Mate -who puts hearts on everything-, owned by Stanford) if you are out there- please save some face and get rid of the hearts on all Black Warrior pencils.

If my call isn't enough, then take a looksie at this post (and first few comments) on Pencil Revolution.
Or how about these on  Pencil Grinder, Office Depot, and Pencil Talk.

Changed your mind yet?  Let me know when you do.

Ha. I am so happy for your discovery, even though you have to bear it with hearts. The Black Warrior finally found love.

No way, man! Hahahaha. I actually took the Bar exam with a black warrior, too. I still have that pencil also.

Is that sort of like having "Pleasure Slave" as a bnonus track on Kings of Metal? Love and war just not meant to go together...

was Mirado always a part of Paper Mate, or was the brand aquired by them recently? Seems like a great example of brand equity being tainted by a mis-management of brand architecture.
